The US presidential election of 2024 is rapidly approaching, marking an important turning point in the nation’s history. The future leader will be chosen by the people, and candidates are actively campaigning. Between the Democrats and the Republicans, five candidates have declared their candidacy, and the United States is prepared to cast their votes to determine the future leader of the country.
Joe Biden
Biden launched his reelection campaign in April of 2023 as a Democrat. His campaign encourages Americans to “finish the job,” and he says that he plans to “fight for our democracy against MAGA extremists.” Biden’s campaign involves improving medical care for Americans, vetoing any potential abortion bans, and will continue providing aid to Ukraine in the war.
Donald Trump
Former US president Donald Trump was the first candidate to declare his intent to run for the GOP nomination of 2024 as a Republican. He is using his former slogan, “Make America Great Again” to urge Americans to vote for him. Trump says he will pardon a large portion of the people convicted in federal offenses for their participation in the attack of the US capitol. In addition, he says he will rebuild our military and establish new screening procedures for immigration.
Marianne Williamson
In March of 2023, Marianne Williamson declared her candidacy for the 2024 presidential election as a Democrat. She is an author who initially gained some fame as Oprah Winfrey’s spiritual advisor, and she unsuccessfully ran in 2020. In her campaign, she says she will legalize cannabis and psychedelics, “vigorously” resist any efforts against reproductive rights, and “declare a national emergency against the gun violence epidemic.”
Nikki Haley
Nikki Haley, former governor of South Carolina who also served as an ambassador to the United Nations during the Trump administration became the first candidate to challenge her employer for the Republican nomination, making history. She declared her candidacy in February, and says she will find a national consensus on abortion, support term limits for members of Congress and “mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old,” and implement tax cuts for working families.
Dean Phillips
Dean Phillips, a three term congressman and former CEO, declared his intent to run for the presidential election in October of 2023, and says that he plans to enhance public safety by increasing police funding and will support immigration reform. He also shared his stance on abortion, saying that he believes Americans should have the freedom to make their own decisions about their health.
