The Mets finished a four-game series against the Phillies over the weekend with a massive 2-1 victory on Sunday night. After Philly took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Mets bullpen completely shut them down, not letting up a run from that point forward. New York scored their runs by way of a Tyrone Taylor RBI single and a solo shot from Brandon Nimmo (his third homer in the Mets last six games) in the bottom of the 6th that gave them the lead.
These three wins for the Mets were crucial for seeding in the NL wild-card race. They are now tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the 2nd wild card spot, two games ahead of the Braves. It just so happens, the Mets will head to Atlanta for a chance to clinch the playoffs in their penultimate series.
After Sunday’s game, Nimmo had this to say regarding the crucial upcoming series in ATL. “It’s a beautiful thing,” “But we’ve worked really hard to get into this position, the job is not done. There’s just as much pressure on the next game as there was in this one…You just have to enjoy the moment. It’s going to be a lot of fun in Atlanta.”
New York just needs to take two of the three games against the Braves to officially clinch a wild-card berth. Closer Edwin Diaz put it bluntly, “We just have to go and win the series if we win the series we will be fine.”
