Will the Mamma Mia Movies Become a Trilogy

If you are a Mamma Mia and ABBA fanatic like I am, I’m sure you are equally as excited for a potential third installment of the greek-y, musical-y, ABBA-y, feel good-y films. Rumors sparked when Judy Cramer, a producer of both the original stage production and the films, sat for an interview with the Daily Mail. She said, “I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with COVID fog. I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see.” She also sprinkled in that she knows that Universal would like her to do it.

While there hasn’t been any official confirmation of a sequel, it would make sense for the studio to be interested in making one, considering the original film earned $609.8 million at the box office, and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again earned nearly $400 million.

We’ve all wished at one point or another to be living like Donna Sheridan in a remote island in Greece. Apparently, the cast of the film agrees as well! When Collider asked Amanda Seyfried, who plays Sophie, if she would return for a third movie, she responded with “Listen, every single person in that movie would say yes in a heartbeat, because we want to hang out with each other. That’s what we talked about last time, like, ‘did we ever think that we’d end up here again on an island in Croatia?’ so yeah, I wish there was a Mamma Mia 3.” Well folks, now we know that if asked to come back, the original cast will most likely say yes, and we will most likely freak out.

According to both Seyfried and Cramer, though, they are afraid that the current ABBA discography wouldn’t have enough songs for the new movie. However, Cramer did mention that the four new songs written by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus from ABBA would be featured in a third film. Although, if it was up to me, I wouldn’t mind hearing Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, and Super Trooper 100 times over.

However, with all this exciting news comes the crashing realization that we will most likely not have a sequel on the big screens anytime soon. That is due to a multitude of reasons, primarily the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, we mustn’t forget the 10 year gap between the first and second films. So, we’re still very far from a potential third movie, so your best bet is to invite your friends over, pop some facemasks on, and stream the first two!
