Daniela Melchior, who plays Isabel in Fast X, recently opened up about what the franchise has in store for her character, even though Isabel’s screen time was fairly short.
Isabel is the aunt of young Bryan, Dom and Elena’s son. While Melchior did account for future stories involving her character, Melchior is unclear on whether Diesel and co. are going to have Isabel pursue vengeance against Charlize Theron’s Cipher for having Elena killed in The Fate of the Furious (2017).
Given that her character is family, Melchior questioned Isabel’s motivations and what she knew of her sister’s death, helping to fit into the feel of the franchise.
“I thought about that as well, so I asked Vin those questions. I was like, ‘Does Isabel know that it was Cipher that killed Elena? Does Isabel think that it was your fault because you let it happen?’”
“I asked all of those questions to Vin, but because we didn’t know where the story would go after this tenth movie, he was just like, ‘Those are interesting questions. Think about them, but you don’t need to put anything in this movie about them right now.’ So, the way that I played it was that it was all in my head. I was putting some guilt on Dom, but we don’t actually know if Isabel even knows about Cipher’s existence,” Melchior said in a comment.
When Melchior’s Isabel first appears in Fast X, she is a mystery. While she is clearly a skilled street racer, the movie quickly lets on that there is more than meets the eye with Dom protecting her over another character despite seemingly being better acquainted with the racer that perishes. Shortly after that, Isabel is revealed to be Elena’s sister, which Dom knew, making her appearance both integral to the growing emotional stakes of the film and the plans the franchise seems to be crafting.
In the film, Melchior lets on that Isabel feels guilty that she is still alive, and the “good sister” isn’t. In order to jump into the character’s pain, Melchior started building her character as soon as she met Vin.
“I didn’t work only with the script that I had. I worked out a backstory that she could have and that would affect the future as well. So, her guilt and her pain is interesting, but how big is this pain? Is it just about Elena? When I read the scenes that I have with Dom, I was like, ‘Okay, maybe everything she touches gets ruined,’ and that’s another layer. So, I wasn’t only focusing on the script. I was also thinking about the next movies, but at that time, I didn’t know about the trilogy. So, I thought, ‘What can I put on the table now that can lead into the future?’”
Now, according to Melchior, Isabel is likely to appear in the coming sequels, as there are lingering story threads she could tie into, especially with Fast X ending on a cliffhanger. Furthermore, the character could have a future in the rumored Fast and Furious female-led spinoff. However, nothing is confirmed at this time.
