New York’s COVID Positivity Rate is Lowest in the Nation

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Sunday that New York’s positivity rate for COVID is now tied for the lowest in the entire U.S.

The seven-day rate of positivity revealed on Sunday in New York was 0.35%, a new low for the state as it has now seen over two months of declining positivity rates. No other state has recorded a rate that low.

This drop in new positive cases is largely from people getting vaccinated, as over 9 million New Yorkers have been fully vaccinated and over 11 million have received at least one dose. 69.7% of the population in New York have been at least partially vaccinated, and Gov. Cuomo has said that once the state passes the 70% threshold for at least one dose, he will loosen most restrictions brought on by the pandemic.

“New York’s COVID-19 numbers continue to hit record lows and New Yorkers are ready to return to normal, and that’s why we’re reducing restrictions and providing vaccination incentives across New York State,” he said, also urging those who have to be vaccinated to get their shots as it is imperative for taking the virus down and being able to live completely normal lives again.

With restrictions getting ready to be lifted, businesses will be able to start operating normally again for the first time in well over a year. Restrictions are still optional, and businesses have the right to continue to enforce mask wearing and social distancing, but most will be looking forward to opening back up to full capacity. Businesses like restaurants, bars, retail, and gyms will not have to follow restrictions once the state hits its 70% mark. However, schools, public transit, and healthcare facilities will still have COVID restrictions in place, according to NBC New York.

As the state looks to open up and return to normalcy, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that there will be a ticker-tape parade on July 7 for the first time since the pandemic started to honor essential workers who have been on the frontline fighting to save people’s lives every day for over a year.
