NY saw its first heat wave of 2024 before summer started and a bad rainstorm in June. Now, just eight days into July, the state faces another heat wave and more rain.
As of noon today and in effect until tomorrow at 8 p.m., CBS News says, a heat advisory has been put in place for most of NYC.
The humidity has greatly affected the heat index, ranging from 95 to 104 degrees. The highs will remain in the low 90s.
Today’s forecast, provided by CBS News, is not great. This morning was warm and humid, and this afternoon is expected to see similar hot temperatures and increased humidity. First Alert Weather is calling today “hazy, hot & humid”. The high will be in the low 90s but, as alluded to above, the humidity will make it feel hotter than it is.
NYC may see a stray shower or a bit of thunder tonight, but that doesn’t mean temperatures or humidity levels will be any better. Tonight is expected to remain warm and humid. Tonight’s lows are expected to be in the 60s and 70s.
Tomorrow will also see hot, humid conditions. The high temperature for the day will still be around 90 but will, again, feel hotter, 95 degrees and above. Small thunderstorms can be expected in the afternoon.
Wednesday will see similar conditions with a high in the upper 80s, a heat index of 95 degrees, and scattered thunderstorms throughout the afternoon.
Thursday, albeit still humid, will see more of a chance of scattered thunderstorms and maybe some downpours. While there’s expected to be a slight decrease in temperature, it’s not enough for NY to see a break from hot, uncomfortable temperatures.
The highs are expected to be in the mid to upper 80s and, again, the humidity won’t help. The heat index is scheduled to be in the low 90s. Friday will see similar temperatures and a continued probability of rain.
While heatwaves aren’t comfortable for anyone, it wouldn’t have been as bad without the humidity. Humidity greatly affected the heat index during NY’s first heat wave, making that week in June almost unbearable. Sadly, this seems to be what’ll happen this week as well. Take the same precautions you took last month, folks, and stay cool.
