Olympic Skater Designed Her Own Uniforms

Olympic Skater Lizzie Armanto stole the show at the 2020 Olympics with her uniform. The American-Finnish athlete’s blue-on-blue kit with swirling white abstract lines was designed by Armanto herself with collaboration with Vans and designer Rachel Finley.

Armanto designed 12 pieces in total, including gears for the coaches. Armanto competed in a short-sleeved jumpsuit on Tuesday, with white socks emblazoned with the Vans logo. The color scheme continued with her teal and cobalt shoes that matched her blue hair.

“I saw a lot of the other team uniforms and that’s exactly how they felt to me: like major league sports uniforms,” Armanto said, “I wanted to keep the authenticity of skating and ensure I still looked like I was wearing something I would wear with or without the Olympics.”

The unique lines on her uniform is actually an homage to Finland, the country she’s competing for. Armanto said she was inspired by Alvar Aalto. “In 1939 he designed a kidney-shaped swimming pool which became synonymous with pool skateboarding much later in the ’70s,” she said, “The various patterns on the jumpsuits are modeled after empty swimming pools around the world.”

This isn’t the first-time skateboarders have collaborated with fashion brands. In 2017, Louis Vuitton collaborated with Supreme and combined streetwear with luxury labels. Skateboarder Orlando Miani starred in Gucci’s Cruise 2020 campaign.

The Olympics have also embraced many other fashion brands this year. Designer Telfar Clemens’ unisex uniform for the Liberia Team was a standout, and Kim Kardashian’s famous brand, Skims, also provided Team USA with loungewear.
