Conversation with Omar Minaya
Bio
Omar Teodoro Antonio Minaya y Sánchez was born on November 10th, 1958 in the Dominican Republic. He moved to Queens, New York City at the age of eight and grew up in Corona. Minaya starred as a baseball player at Newtown High School in Elmhurst, and later was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 1978 MLB draft. After injuries ended his playing career, he joined the Texas Rangers Scouting Team in 1985, where he helped scout players such as Sammy Sosa, Juan Guanzáles, and Ivan Rodriguez. He was assistant general manager of the New York Mets, general manager of the Montreal Expos, and senior vice president of baseball operations for the San Diego Padres. Currently, he serves as the senior advisor to baseball operations for the New York Yankees.
He is currently 65 years old and his son, Justin Minaya, proudly plays in the NBA for the Portland Trail Blazers.
