Paramore’s Hayley Williams Says We’re Experiencing “One of the Most Impactful Movements in Modern Music History”

In her new BBC Sounds podcast, frontwoman for the popular band Paramore discussed the positive shifts she’s seeing in the music industry today. Everything is Emo is a 20-part series of hour-long episodes where Williams discusses music that shaped the industry from the ‘90s until now. She reflects that today artists and fans alike care much less about restricting themselves to a single genre.

Paramore became one of the most popular bands to emerge from the emo music scene, and Williams hopes that this podcast will be a way to open discussion among fans of the genre. She admits that today emo can still be “equated with eyeliner and heavily straightened bangs”, something she jokes about having perpetuated herself. However, feels the impact of emo music and the scene in general has become a significant part of music history and according to Williams, “continues to grow and blossom.”

Williams believes emo music has spilled into other genres and become “bigger than just guitars and bands”. She describes it as music that is written with emotion, whether it be angsty lyrics or something that means a lot to someone. In her opinion if it’s written with and about emotions, then it fits into the genre.

This is vastly different from the perception of the genre when Paramore first came on the scene almost two decades ago. At that time no one in the scene wanted to call the genre emo because it wasn’t taken seriously. Today major artists such as Billie Eilish, who grew up listening to Paramore, is one of the biggest names in pop music and arguably a little bit emo.
