Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Give First Interview Since Separating From Royal Family

On Sunday night, millions of  US viewers tuned in to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s first interview since officially separating from the royal family last year. The exclusive interview was conducted by Oprah Winfrey, and many shocking new details were revealed by the couple. They addressed their longtime battle with the UK tabloids and how this affected their mental health extensively, but perhaps the most shocking portions of the interview were focused on their treatment by the royal family.

One of the most upsetting topics that was addressed was that of Meghan’s interactions with the royal family while pregnant with her (now one-year-old) son Archie. Said Meghan, “in the months when I was pregnant… we have in tandem the conversation of he won’t be given security, he’s not going to be given a title, and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.” She then revealed that she experienced suicidal thoughts during the time that she was carrying out her royal duties, to which Prince Harry explained that the royal family refused to help her, saying, “it was not a conversation to be had.”

The couple heavily emphasized the royal family’s “refusal to provide security” for them. Harry also explained that seeing how the royal family treated his wife offered him insight into how his mother, Princess Diana, must have felt. As for where his relationship with his family stands now, Harry stated that he was “disappointed” with the actions of his father, Prince Charles, and that he and his brother, Prince William, whom he “loves to bits,” are on “different paths.” He additionally said that he “had a really good relationship” with his grandmother, the Queen.

The interview immediately generated widespread support for Harry and Meghan. On Twitter, #AbolishTheMonarchy was trending post interview in the UK, and many public figures shared heartfelt messages to the couple on social media, including Serena Williams. On a positive note, Harry and Meghan revealed that their second child (expected this summer) will be a girl.
