Former Victoria’s Secret creative director Raúl Martinez has been appointed global creative director of Vogue, effective Feb. 5.
Vogue’s parent company Condé Nast announced the appointment on Thursday – and it is hardly Martinez’s first stint with the magazine. He first worked for Vogue from 1988 to 1996 as an associate art director, and later worked for Condé Nast starting in 2009. He served as chief creative officer from 2015 until he left in 2021 to work for Victoria’s Secret.
According to the announcement, Martinez will oversee Vogue’s visual approach and creative direction “on all platforms,” including increased support for “seamlessly” including video in storytelling, ranging from short social media clips to longer form projects. Martinez will replace Juan Costa Paz in the role, with the latter returning to his own creative agency.
“One of the things I am most excited about is using our platform to introduce up-and-coming creatives to the world, as well as to mentor young artists,” Martinez said in the announcement. “I also look forward to imagining new ways to tell stories – whether in-book, on social, digital, or video.”
“Raul knows Vogue inside and out, and is not only a brilliant, creative thinker, but a great leader and wonderful colleague,” said Vogue editorial director Anna Wintour in the announcement “I know I speak for the entire team when I say I am so thrilled to have him back.”
Condé Nast was first formed in 1922 by then-owner and publisher of Vogue Condé Montrose Nast, and is headquartered in New York City. The company is itself owned by Advance Publications, Inc. since its purchase in 1959.
