U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez attended the 2021 Met Gala on Monday night, and the politician came with a political message on her gown. The New York Democrat wore a floor-length white gown with “Tax the Rich” written in red on the back of the dress, which was designed by Aurora James.
“When Aurora and I were first kind of partnered, we really started having a conversation about what it means to be working-class women of color at the Met, and we said, ‘We can’t just play along, but we need to break the fourth wall and challenge some of the institutions,’” said Ocasio-Cortez.
Ocasio-Cortez’s red carpet look instantly drew much online attention. Former President Donald Trump said, “What makes AOC a bigger fraud: The ‘tax the rich’ dress while she’s hanging out with a bunch of wealthy leftwing elites or the lack of masks after spending the past 18 months as one of the biggest authoritarian mask Karens in the country.”
Actor Michael Rapaport wrote on Twitter, “Custom TAX THE RICH dress while at the most elitist event in the world, AOC will soon be rich with a ginormous production deal from somewhere and done with politics, guarantee it. Stop treating ANY of these people like celebrities. They are public servants and work for us.”
Ocasio-Cortez isn’t the only one who came with a political message. New York congresswoman, Rep. Carolyn Maloney arrived at fashion’s biggest night in a dress with the message “Equal Rights for Women” written on her dress, and she carried a handbag advocating for the Equal Rights Amendment.
Taking the office at the age of 29, Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest woman ever to serve in the U.S. Congress, and she has been one of the most prominent progressive voices in support of President Biden’s $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation package.
