Russia Reaches Out to China for Military Aid

U.S. officials stated that Russia reached out to China to get help in military and economic aid. There had been sanctions imposed on Russia from nations around the world because of their unjust act in the Ukrainian War. The interviewed officials refused to share any information about what kind of military weapons Russia is needing.

President Xi Jinping and Mr. Putin has formed a strong bond in the past couple of years. The U.S. officials are keeping an eye on China to see if they will take action in the war on Ukraine. Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser, said, “We are communicating directly, privately to Beijing that there will absolutely be consequences for large-scale sanctions evasion efforts or support to Russia to backfill them.” He didn’t speak about Russia getting military support in China to keep intelligence matters for him and his team. Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy, said that he didn’t hear about this request for economic and military support. He adds that Beijing wants to see peace in the war on Ukraine too. Sullivan stated that the Chinese officials were possibly aware of the invasion, but they did not get the full information on what the Russians would do. Putin may have lied to China about his plans for Europe as he had done so to the European countries.

Usually, China would receive military support from Russia. Although Russia has increased their sales of weaponry to China, China has more advanced weaponry that Russia seeks for, such as in missiles and drones. Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, stated, “Now that Russia has made these false claims, and China has seemingly endorsed this propaganda, we should all be on the lookout for Russia to possibly use chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine, or to create a false flag operation using them.”

Evan Medeiros, a former senior Asia director on the National Security Council during the Obama administration, said, “I think what the U.S. is probably going to do is lay out the costs and consequences of China’s complicity and possible enabling of Russia’s invasion. I don’t think anyone in the administration has illusions that the U.S. can pull China away from Russia.” At this time, the United States are finding ways to have President Xi Jinping distanced from the war on Ukraine.
