Singer and actress Selena Gomez recently announced that she will be starring in the Hulu series ‘Only Murders in the Building’ alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short, but on Tuesday she slammed the TV show ‘The Good Fight’ for joking about her kidney transplant she went through in 2017.
The scene that aired on the law drama series last month featured two characters debating on whether they could joke about Gomez’s kidney transplant or not. The singer responded on Tuesday on social media.
“I am not sure how writing jokes about organ transplants for television shows has become a thing but sadly it has apparently,” she wrote. “I hope in the next writer’s room when one of these tasteless jokes are presented it’s called out immediately and doesn’t make it on air.”
Gomez also thanked her fans for sending “RESPECT SELENA GOMEZ” trending on Twitter and encouraged them to become an organ donor if they can. Gomez became an advocate for organ donation after she had her kidney transplant due to her struggle with lupus.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Gomez’s story was used as a joke in a TV show. Peacock’s ‘Saved by the Bell’reboot notoriously had two characters argue about “who really gave Selena her kidney.” There’s even a scene where they questioned if Gomez “even had a kidney.”
After the intense backlash from Gomez’s fans, the network apologized and removed the scene. They also promised to make a donation to the Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at the University of Southern California.
