Athlete of the Month for February 2021
Sky Brown is the world’s youngest professional skateboarder who is set compete for Britain at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, which will be the first Olympic Games in which skateboarding is included.
Brown was born in Miyazaki, Japan and has a Japanese mother and British father. Her family skateboards and surfs, and she has been doing it since she could stand. She is the youngest athlete to ever be sponsored by Nike, was the youngest professional skateboarder in the world at 10.
The skater is also mostly self-taught and doesn’t have a coach even though she competes (and wins) regularly. She learns new tricks from YouTube and sometimes practices with other athletes like Shaun White, the Olympic Snowboarder. In an interview with ESPN Tony Hawk spoke in awe of her skills and said that her confidence and force is incredibly rare, even calling her “a unicorn.”
