Slavery Petition in a Kansa City School Sparks National

Why do people keep connecting everything to racism? Is it a thing of the past, right? Wrong. In mid-September at Park Hill South High School, an online slavery petition was created and circulated by the student body. Almost a month after the incident, it still generates conversation about the racism present in schools across the country. Should teenagers be taught about racism and the significant role it played in the history of the United States?

Park Hill South High School has still not been transparent with the media regarding which students or the number of students involved in the incident. They have also neglected to mention the type of punishment these students received. Students could have received anything from a sit down with the principal to being expelled.

While expulsion is the only consequence that seems fitting for the crime, an incident like this calls attention to a more significant issue. The idea of a slavery petition from a person in 2021 indicates the lack of education children are receiving about chattel slavery and racism as a whole. This year especially, republicans across the United States are notorious for advocating for a tailored version of U.S. history.

Parents in the Kansas City area reported that the school had not done much to remedy the incident. Unfortunately, this is not a singular occurrence. A week before the slavery petition, a school thirty minutes from Park Hill South High School experienced a similar prom-relatedracial event.

The education curriculum in the United States needs to be revamped. Some parents might want to spare their children from the harsh realities of the history of the United States, but that is a privilege that Black families do not have. The only way to prevent further incidents like this one is to incorporate lessons about slavery, the slave trade, racism in the past and present in the U.S in school curriculums.
