The end of last week was a sad moment for Aerosmith fans, with the band officially announcing their retirement from touring after Steven Tyler suffered a vocal injury the year prior.
During a September 2023 show, Tyler, 76, fractured his larynx. Aerosmith’s difficult decision was announced last Friday, August 2nd. Their statement explaining their reasoning, provided by PEOPLE, includes the following:
“As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible…We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision…to retire from the touring stage. We are grateful beyond words for everyone who was pumped to get on the road with us one last time”.
The band’s members have thanked their fan base, calling them “our Blue Army”, for their constant support. According to the band, some Blue Army members have been with them since the beginning. Forever grateful, the band told fans “You are the reason we made rock ‘n’ roll history”.
In February, Tyler’s daughter, Mia, told PEOPLE that while her father was recovering, he wasn’t following his doctor’s instructions. Expanding on this, she stated:
“He’s not supposed to be talking sometimes, so I have to literally yell at him and be like, ‘You can’t be on the phone with me right now, let’s just text’…You can’t shut him up – he can’t close that mouth”.
Here, Mia acknowledges how her father will use Siri or speak out his texts rather than type.
Despite this, Mia has said that her father is “very healthy”.
Retiring from touring is a difficult decision for bands, especially ones that are popular or have been around for a long time. But, in Aerosmith’s situation, fans understand the band’s decision. The safety and health of Aerosmith’s members take priority over everything.
The band of the hit song “Walk This Way” has the support of their fans and will forever be a part of rock-and-roll culture, shared by fans with the generations to come.
