Superman Comes Out As Bisexual In New Comic Series

It was announced Monday Oct. 11th, otherwise known as National Coming Out Day in the United States, that the new Superman is coming out as bisexual. The latest series follows Jon Kent, son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, as he takes over the role of Superman while his father is out saving intergalactic lives somewhere.

Jon’s love interest is Jay Nakamura, a hacktivist and news reporter who has pink hair and powers of his own. The two met earlier in the series’ run, but will become romantically involved in the next issue coming out in November.

The announcement has of course received plenty of backlash, but the vast majority of people online have supported DC Comics and creator of the series, Tom Taylor. In an interview with The New York Times, Taylor spoke of how, “The idea of replacing Clark Kent with another straight white savior felt like a missed opportunity.” Instead, Taylor wished for a changing of the tides to fit what society looks like and cares about today in “writing for the people who will hopefully see this Superman…and say ‘This Superman is like me. This Superman is fighting for things that concern me.”

So far, the series has seen Jon fight wildfires caused by climate change, stop a school shooting, and protest the deportation of refugees.
