An Appreciation of Love and Life in Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides, Now”

If you have watched the movie CODA, you’ve probably recognized the song that actress Emilia Jones sang in sign language for her audition at Berklee College of Music. Her own rendition of “Both Sides, Now” brought many audiences to tears when they saw and listened to her voice, honoring the lyrics of Joni Mitchell who originally created the song. In our younger years, we often think about ourselves, but this song teaches us to appreciate the little things in life because nothing is permanent in this life.

Super Bowl-winning coach Bruce Arians is stepping down as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is inviting a devoted friend and highly skilled defensive coordinator Todd Bowles to continue coaching the Buccaneers team. In Arians’s statement, “I wanted to ensure when I walked away that Todd Bowles would have the best opportunity to succeed.”

Today I woke up thinking about the great Yanks manager, Billy Martin. I had watched a documentary on the YES Network about Billy the night before and it made me quite emotional because it naturally took me back to a different time. It reminded me of moments when I didn’t want to exist and Billy would take me to his office, close the door and tell me to “wake up” because no matter how bad I think I have it, there is someone else who has it much worse.
