Korean Pop Bands Meets with Biden

The South Korean band BTS met with United States President Joe Biden on May 31st, to address the issue of hate crimes against Asians in America. The meeting fell on the final day of Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander month. BTS is no stranger to fundraising and speaking out for social justice issues, they consider themselves youth ambassadors and focus on spreading a positive message worldwide.

Hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders continue to soar. As of a recent report from stopaapihate.org, from March of 2020 to December of 2021, there have been a total of 10,905 reported hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Verbal harassment is the biggest category 63.0% with physical assault following in second 16.2%, and avoidance of AAPIs at 16.1%. In March of 2020, WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic and President Donald Trump declared coronavirus a national emergency.

In 2021, record shows that 48,691 homeless people reside in New York City. In January 2020, record shows 1,670 homeless people slept in New York’s subway station. Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul planned on sending social workers to remove homeless people who sleep in the subways. The police will enforce rules in the subway station such as not allowing someone to take on multiple seats.
