Starting on Saturday, the new three digit number will become a suicide and crisis lifeline. The launch of 988 will make access to mental health and resources more accessible to people across the country. The hotline will provide 24/7 free and confidential support around the U.S. to those experiencing mental health distress. People across the country will be able to call or text if they start to experience a crisis. Advocates hope that this new focus on emergency assistance will bring about the expansion of other mental health services that are in short supply in many communities.
