The sequel film to the original Avatar movie is facing calls for a boycott over its alleged “appropriation” of indigenous and African cultures. The film, a sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 smash hit Avatar, focuses on the Na’vi, the blue-skinned inhabitants of an alien planet called Pandora.

Mexico’s Ministry of Culture accuses clothing brands of appropriation
Mexico’s Ministry of culture has accused fashion giants Zara and Anthropologie of cultural appropriation, citing the patterns on select pieces in their latest drops that are reportedly using patterns identical to those traditional in certain indigenous Mixteca community.
In a statement, the culture ministry asked the companies to provide a “public explanation on what basis could privatize collective property.” The ministry says that the companies have taken inspiration from designs that were created in Oaxaca, without providing any benefit to the communities. The agency has called on the companies to rectify this and give considerations to the indigenous communities.
