Saturday night, the neighborhood Itaewon in Seoul, South Korea, known for its nightlife, celebrated Halloween. Unfortunately, what began as innocent Halloween festivities quickly turned dangerous as thousands of young South Koreans filled up Itaewon’s narrow streets. The crowds surged, and with no place to go, over 150 people died in the stampede. This was the first time the county has been able to enjoy Halloween festivities since the beginning of the pandemic. Video footage from before the stampede shows just how little space there was between the massive number of people. Young people were stuck shoulder to shoulder with no room to move.
