Haiti’s Cholera Death Toll Reaches 136

A deadly resurgence of cholera in Haiti has claimed 136 lives so far, according to the Haitian Health Ministry. In a statement issued by the ministry, 89 of the people infected died in a hospital or in a cholera treatment center, while 47 of them died at home. People who live in places with limited safe drinking water or poor sanitation are the most vulnerable to cholera, which is transmitted via bacteria-contaminated food or water. Although vaccines do exist to treat the disease, according to the World Health Organization, cholera remains a threat through dehydration in developing countries like Haiti. The Haitian government is cooperating with international health organizations to respond to the outbreak, which until October had been largely stamped out after a public nationwide effort. Prior to last month, no cases had been reported for over three years.
