New Zealand has declared a national state of emergency as Cyclone Gabrielle cuts off power, roads, and communication infrastructure, destroying homes and trapping people on roofs in what has been described as a natural disaster with no precedents. According to New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Chris Hipkins, “Cyclone Gabrielle is the most significant weather event New Zealand has seen in this century. The severity and the damage that we are seeing has not been experienced in a generation.”
