Liz Truss Becomes New Prime Minister of U.K.

Mary Elizabeth Truss of Britain’s Conservative Party–known to the public as Liz Truss–has succeeded Boris Johnson as the UK’s prime minister as of today (Sept. 6). Truss’ status was made official after being formally appointed by Queen Elizabeth at Balmoral Castle, Scotland in a ceremony known as the “kissing of the hands”–a British constitutional term that refers to the installation of Crown-appointed ministers. Truss formerly served as Johnson’s foreign secretary.

Candidates Running For Prime Minister To Replace Boris Johnson

Following the resignation of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, eight new candidates for Prime Minister have emerged, with the first official round of voting taking place next Wednesday. The diverse bunch, with four men and four women, consists of Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, Tom Tugendhat, Kemi Badenoch, Penny Mordaunt, Jeremy Hunt, Nadhim Zahawi and Suella Braverman, who have each received at least 20 nominations from members of Parliament, which is the minimum amount to be added to the ballot.

The devastating news has been announced that the former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, was assassinated today during a campaign rally in Nara. At 67 years old, Abe was the longest-serving Japanese Prime Minister, with two terms from 2006 to 2007 then again from 2012 to 2020; he stepped down from the position in 2020 due to poor health, but continued to speak at political events and campaign for other politicians.
