Ohio Train Derailment Prompts Public Health Concerns

After several derailed train cars released toxic fumes last week, health and environmental concerns are mounting in East Palestine, Ohio. It took several days for firefighters to put out a fire caused by about 50 Norfolk Southern train cars going off track in Ohio on Feb. 3. There were hazardous chemicals in ten of the 50 derailed cars, including butyl acrylate and vinyl chloride, which authorities feared would cause a major explosion. A precautionary evacuation was later ordered for residents of East Palestine. Crews conducted a “controlled release” of hazardous chemicals on Monday, Feb. 6, resulting in a large plume of black smoke.
