Rethinking the Olympics

For centuries, countries around the world have gathered together once every four years to indulge in games and festivities that unite all peoples together under a common humanity. This wonderful event which started in Greece nearly 3,000 years ago, only having adapted into how we currently experience the event in 1896, is known as the Olympics. The goal of the Olympics, other than to compete in different challenges for medals, is to unite humanity and to promote world peace, through shared human experiences. However, in recent years, thanks to that global pandemic of 2020, our society and ideologies have shifted. Now, both approval and viewership ratings for the Olympics are on the decline, and it is about time that something gets done about it. After all, the Olympics are one of the only opportunities for the countries of the world to get together and embrace our common humanity and love of games.

China Asks Russia to Postpone War with Ukraine Until After the Winter Olympics

The New York Times reports from a western intelligence report that senior Chinese officials told Russian officials in early February to delay their invasion of Ukraine until after the Winter Olympics, hosted in Beijing, China. The Times article suggests that the Chinese officials had some prior knowledge of Russia’s plan to attack Ukraine. Before the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Beijing on February 4th, almost a month ago, Russian leader President Vladimir Putin met with China’s leader, President Xi Jinping. There, they issue a statement declaring their partnership has “no limits.”
