The discussion concerning men’s sports versus women’s sports often centers around a large discrepancy in salary. The largest gap exists in basketball, with NBA players making an average of over $8 million, while a WNBA players earn an average of only $75,000. In soccer, whose female athletes have been recently very outspoke, the difference in pay is nearly $400,000 in the United States. Across the sports basketball, soccer, tennis, baseball, and golf women can make anywhere from 15% to almost 100% less than male athletes. However, the reasoning behind this is about a lot more than numbers, particularly our society’s perception of athletic women.
