Netflix’s recently released animated series was inspired by the first Black samurai, who was known as Yasuke. Kat Moon’s Time magazine article dives into his story in detail: Yasuke arrived in Japan in 1579 from Africa alongside an Italian Jesuit missionary. While there are many holes in his story, records say that he was a samurai warrior under the impactful feudal lord Oda Nobunaha.
