Teenager Identifies Family Members as Trump Supporters Involved in Violent Altercation

18-year-old Helena Duke of Massachusetts identified her mother, aunt, and uncle as members of the extremist MAGA mob who traveled to DC last week. A video taken last Tuesday night, in which several Trump supporters can be seen getting into a violent altercation with a Black woman in DC, had been circulating the internet when Duke’s cousin reportedly shared it with her on Thursday morning. Duke then recognized her mother, Therese Duke, her aunt, Annie Lorenz, and her uncle, Richard Lorenz among the Trump supporters in the video. According to a series of tweets the Black woman made, the altercation was catalyzed by the Trump supporters harassing her. In the video, the woman is seen hitting Therese Duke in the face after Duke apparently tried to grab her as the encounter escalated.

After seeing the video, Duke, a lesbian who says her mother kicked her out of the house because of her views, which included her support of the Black Lives Matter movement, tweeted: “hi mom remember the time you told me I shouldn’t go to BLM protests bc they could get violent…this you?” She then proceeded to identify her family members by name, tweeting: “Hi this is the liberal lesbian of the family who has been kicked out multiple times for her views and for going to BLM protests to care what happens to me so: Mom: Therese Duke, Uncle: Richard Lorenz, Aunt: Annie Lorenz.”

Duke said that her mother had lied to her about where she was traveling last week, telling her daughter that she was taking her aunt somewhere to undergo a procedure. Additionally, she had turned off the location settings in a phone tracking app that the two use together. Duke said she had suspected that it was possible her mother might have been traveling to the rally. Upon her identification of them, her family members have reportedly begged her to take the tweets down, but she hasn’t. “I always felt almost heartbroken over how they viewed the world and how skewed it was and how they wouldn’t allow me to express my views. But showing that they can act in such a horrible way is just really appalling to me. I am honestly very disappointed to have to be part of this family that is so…just, very not welcoming or supportive. I don’t feel safe being part of this family,” Duke told BuzzFeed News. At this time, it is still unknown whether Duke’s family members were present for the violent siege on the Capitol which occurred last Wednesday. Duke has set up a GoFundMe, asking for assistance in paying for college, as she hopes to eventually enter into law school.
