Fashion Designer of the Month for October 2022

Bio

Ever wondered about those totes marked with a “TC” emblem that have inevitably made their way onto your social media feed? Those popular purses would be the work of one Telfar Clemens, a Liberian-American fashion designer whose name has quickly become one associated with trendiness and Black-owned luxury.

An NYC native, Telfar Clemens is a queer trendsetter and lifelong lover of fashion who founded his unisex label Telfar in 2005. His aim? To redefine gender norms and inclusivity in high fashion, a venture that has proved highly successful with the virality of his iconic vegan leather “Bushwick Birkin” totes and laidback streetwear collection. His unique “one-look-fits-all” style earned Telfar the honor of being the first solo Black male designer to win the Council of Fashion Designers of America / Vogue Fashion Fund in 2017.

Telfar’s success simply can’t be understated, and his vision for his label goes just beyond surface level statements for inclusivity; pieces are often priced affordably (as far as “affordable” goes in the world of luxury fashion) in a way that doesn’t compromise on elegance and style. Telfar has even turned down invitations to prestigious events such as the Met Gala, which have earned him a fiercely dedicated fanbase that includes the likes of Oprah, Beyoncé, and Bella Hadid. It’s clear that Telfar Clemens intends to keep on his own path in the often volatile world of fashion–and he is that more iconic for it.
