Artist of the Month for July 2022
Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, is 27 year old singer, record producer, and songwriter from Lagos, Nigeria.Her unique voice has been described as deep, velvety, and androgynous. As a child, she learned how to play the piano, recorded songs with her school choir and practiced with her brother’s guitar often. Tems’ passion was influenced by listening to the likes of Beyonce, Lil Wayne, Adele, Alicia Keys, Aaliyah and Burna Boy, to name a few.
In September of 2020, Tems released her debut extended play, For Broken Ears, which she produced the majority of. A month later, she was featured on fellow Nigerian singer Wizkid’s hit single, “Essence.” The song earned her first career entry on Billboard Hot 100 at number 9. With her appearance on Future’s 2022 single, “Wait for U”, Tems became the first African artist and the second Nigerian artist to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Among her numerous nominations, Tems has won two NAACP Image Awards, two BET Awards and a Soul Train Music Award so far, With her win at the 2022 BET awards, Tems joins Ice Prince, Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy as Nigerians who have won the BET Awards.
