Over the past year, 90s trends have been returning to mainstream culture, especially within the makeup community. The latest trend to return from the 90s is known as the “supermodel lip.” This term, however, is just a fancy way of saying brown lip liner. Regardless, this trend is back, and it’s better than ever.
While celebrities and their makeup artists usually start these trends, the return of brown lip liner was slow to reach the mainstream. Now, however, it has filtered through, as it was showcased by a variety of celebrities at the Grammys, including Megan Thee Stallion and Lizzo.
The trend has now been elevated to meet the more modern wave of wearable and natural beauty. While back in the 90s it was most popular to wear a dark brown liner without blending it into the lipstick, the trend is now much subtler.
In the 90s, it was popular to use a liner that was four to five shades darker than your skin tone, but it is now the trend to pick a liner that is only two to three shades darker and pair it with a lipstick that will blend well with the liner. The key to this old-but-improved trend is blending the lipstick and liner together to create a beautifully wearable look that brings a note of the 90s into 2021.
