The Disappearance of Miya Marcano

19-year-old Miya Marcano went missing on September 24 in the Orlando, Florida area. Her family is frantic as they plead to the public and law enforcement to help find their loved one who went missing last week. Marcano’s disappearance began gaining traction on social media following the uproar this past month regarding the inconsistency in response to missing persons cases between white people and minorities. This comes subsequent to the wide coverage of the disappearance of Gabby Petito.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s office, Marcano worked and lived at the Arden Villas. Her family stated that she booked a flight for that Friday night to Fort Lauderdale, but she never made it on the plane. Detectives stepped in and, upon investigation, named 27-year-old Armando Manuel Caballero as a person of interest. Caballero worked as a maintenance man at the complex since June.

On Friday, Marcano was working at the Arden Villas and got off around 5 p.m. About 30 minutes prior, a maintenance worker used a master key fob to access Marcano’s apartment. Orange County Sheriff John Mina stated. It is said the maintenance worker was indeed Caballero. “He had demonstrated a romantic interest in Miya. This was repeatedly rebuffed by Miya.” Mina stated.

During questioning, Caballero initially told authorities that he’d last seen Marcano around 3 p.m. From the findings within their investigation in which they found that Caballero used a masterkey to break into Marcano’s home, a warrant was issued for his arrest. Law enforcement looked for Caballero over the weekend, but ultimately found him dead on Monday at another apartment complex he worked for in Seminole County, just north of Orlando.

“It appears he has killed himself.” Mina said. With the person of interest now dead, it leaves the  law enforcement to try to piece together exactly what happened that afternoon to find Marcano. “Miya is still missing, her disappearance is suspicious and our detectives and her family members obviously suspect foul play.” Mina stated.
