The legacy of “The Sopranos” on crime drama television

Many crime drama shows have left their mark on television history, from shows like “The Wire” and “True Detective” to “Breaking Bad” and “BoardWalk Empire”. Audiences can not get enough of storylines that take place in true-life scenarios with high stakes. David Chase’s “The Sopranos” has been pointed out by critics and industry insiders as a standout of “The Golden Era of Television” and a pioneer in the crime drama genre. Today its legacy continues to inspire storytellers and many shows attempt to emulate the success of this titan of the small screen.

David Chase admittedly was not eager to work in television, he was interested in becoming a feature film director, and the concept of “The Sopranos” was meant to be a film. However, it occurred to him that he could further explore the organized crime theme through the lens of family dynamics which had been a tried and successful method in television, with the slight differentiator of making a dysfunctional one. Adding the subplot of a crime boss having therapy sessions made for a wealth of opportunities to explore from a storyline perspective.

After six seasons, a long list of accolades, and more than 20 years since its premiere many wonder what has made the show so relevant after all these years. Diving into the mind of Tony informed many good decisions in the storytelling that make it relatable today. The character is not meant to be likable. Yet he is made completely human through the things that affect him throughout, from lavish dream sequences to panic attacks and intense arguments. It all comes alive with an excellent selection of music and knowing when to have an intimate silence that compels audiences to follow along. The photography style and story arch are now in the bones of many successful programs today and it is thanks to exploring everyday frustrations that makes for an intriguing viewing experience.
