The Viral ‘Milk Crate’ Challenge Has Swept States Across the Nation

Got milk? The #cratechallenge has taken over many states across the country. California, New York, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Louisiana are just a few who are participating in this new daredevil challenge. Originally known as the “hood olympics” the trend allegedly first surfaced on Facebook by user Kenneth Waddell.

The new wipeout-inducing challenge quickly shifted to TikTok where it went viral, accumulating 15.3 million collective views across the platform. The crate challenge consists of stacking dozens of milk crates on top of one another in the shape of a staggered staircase that goes up one way and down the other. The goal is to walk up and back down the stacked milk crates without falling.

There have been a few that were able to successfully complete the challenge, but others were not so lucky. After a series of videos were posted to social media of some quite dangerous falls from failed attempts at the challenge, doctors have raised major concerns for participants. “The milk crate challenge is very dangerous, and we are seeing many orthopedic injuries as a result of the falls.” Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Shawn Anthony told TODAY. He also stated these injuries can include: shoulder dislocations, broken wrists, ACL tears, or even fatal conditions like spinal cord injuries.

Other health officials urged to not participate in the trend as it is not safe and “silly” to attempt and potentially harm oneself. to avoid the crate challenge as the injuries might cause for surgery and hospital visits, underlining that doctors and nurses are already overworked with COVID-19 patients and the rising cases.

Over the years we have seen a plethora of challenges surface, but not one quite like this. Although this trend is entertaining to indulge in as new videos and memes surface by the minute, it is also extremely dangerous. Before participating in this challenge, think about the self-harm you may cause and the emergency hospital staff that will have to tend to your potential injuries. They are already dealing with a lot as the COVID-19 cases rise. The #cratechallenge also poses the question, are milk crates that easily accessible?
