Canadian singer, songwriter, and record producer The Weeknd posted on social media last Sunday (Jan. 7th) teasing the last chapter in his latest album trilogy. The post consists of the covers for ‘After Hours’ (2020) and ‘Dawn FM’ (2022), followed by a picture with a question mark and a “parental advisory” label. On the caption he only added “3”, continuing the post’s mysterious streek.
In May last year, the artist made comments on his journey as his alter ego The Weeknd (whose real name is Abel Tesfaye), and the future of his trilogy via W Magazine.
“It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn,” he stated.
Before his exciting post last Sunday, The Weeknd built an aurora of intrigue when he made a retweetthat read “pain, regret, rebirth.” With three silhouettes at presumably different stages in life accompanying it; one displayed a child against a purple backdrop while the other two seemed to be at later stages in life in no particular order. The series of posts made for a very intriguing weekend without a doubt.
According to NME.com, The Weeknd had previously described the album’s concept as a state of purgatory—a journey towards the “light at the end of a tunnel”, and fans believed that the upcoming album could be something that refers to an afterlife, which is consistent with the concept of “rebirth”, hinted at in his X/Twitter post. The truth is that with such an enigmatic artist we just won’t know until the album is here, but we cannot wait to experience it.
