Trump Files $100 Million Lawsuit Against Niece and New York Times

Former President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit in a New York state court on Tuesday against his niece Mary Trump, and several New York Times  journalists for disclosing his tax information that was published in some New York Times articles.

The lawsuit, which is believed to be about $100 million dollars, accuses Mary Trump for breaching a contract and violating a 2001 settlement agreement among the Trump family. The three Times reporters: Susanne Craig, David Barstow, and Russell Buettner were also accused of “tortious interference” and how they “relentlessly sought out Mary Trump and intentionally procured her breach of the Settlement Agreement.”

“The defendants engaged in an insidious plot to obtain confidential and highly-sensitive records which they exploited for their own benefit and utilized as a means of falsely legitimizing their publicized works,” the lawsuit claims.

Craig, Barstow, and Buettner received a Pulitzer Prize in 2019 for their series of stories and reportings that gave the public a different look into Trump’s finances. Mary Trump has also said that she released Trump’s tax returns to the Times in her best-selling 2020 book about her uncle, “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man.”

“I think he is a loser, and he is going to throw anything against the wall he can. It’s desperation. The walls are closing in and he is throwing anything against the wall that he thinks will stick,” Mary Trump said in a statement. “As is always the case with Donald, he’ll try and change the subject.”

The New York Times also released a statement, and they have plans to challenge the lawsuit. Danielle Rhoades Ha, a spokesperson for the paper said, “‘The Times’ coverage of Donald Trump’s taxes helped inform citizens through meticulous reporting on a subject of overriding public interest. This lawsuit is an attempt to silence independent news organizations and we plan to vigorously defend against it.”
