Turkey Bacon vs. Pig Bacon

The one aspect that divides bacon lovers worldwide; it is an age-old question, turkey bacon or bacon bacon, aka pig bacon? Which tastes better? Which is the better bacon? Which reigns supreme?

As a vegan, I lose no sleep when it comes to this debate. Turkey or pig, it doesn’t really matter to me. But as a former meat-lover, I have to say my vote is with turkey. It’s what I grew up eating and falling in love with—especially when it’s slightly charred paired with some eggs and pancakes. It wasn’t until I was a little older that I tried the much raved about pig bacon while visiting my cousins in Canada.

While the shriveled, fatty pig bacon did have some unique qualities, in my opinion, it held no flame to turkey bacon. The flavor of the pig bacon was very one-note. It tasted of fat with a side of meat, whereas the turkey bacon offered so much more taste. My brother, on the other hand, would not hesitate to disagree with me. Although he also grew up eating turkey bacon, he is now a strict pig bacon consumer only.

It comes down to what you’re looking to get from your bacon. Turkey bacon is notoriously healthier, but pig bacon tastes “ how bacon is supposed to taste.” If you want the gritty, fat flavor, then forget turkey; pig is the way to go. Whichever you prefer, I’ll stick to Turkey on my BLT; thank you.
