U.S Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Linda Thomas-Greenfield will represent the U.S. at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics closing ceremony on Aug. 8
She will see U.S. athletes participate in finals and meet with members of Team USA, as well as Japanese and Olympic officials, during her visit, which runs from Aug. 6-8, according to NBC News.
Thomas-Greenfield, who has made refugee and humanitarian concerns a top focus at the UN, also wants to interact with the Refugee Olympic Team, which is competing for the second time at the Olympics. She’ll be the first American ambassador to the UN to meet with the refugee team.
The 29 athletes that made up this year’s Olympic Refugee Team came from 55 countries: Afghanistan, Cameroon, Congo, Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, and Venezuela.
The Olympic Games will conclude on Aug. 8, with the closing ceremony airing on NBC at 7 a.m. ET, 8 p.m. EST.
