‘Velma’ animated series canceled at Max

Max officially announced earlier this week that their animated series ‘Velma’ would be canceled after just two seasons. The series followed the iconic Mystery Inc. but with a new spin on things. In this alternative universe, Velma is the star. There were some other major changes from the original idea of classic Scooby-Doo shows. For starters, each member of the group is a different race with Velma being Indian-American, Norville (Shaggy) being African-American, and Daphne is portrayed as Asian.

Show creators Charlie Grandy and executive producer Mindy Kaling (who also voices Velma) added more relevant topics like LGBTQ+ rights and created what was a more raunchy cartoon rather than the goofy mysteries solved by Scooby and the gang. Speaking of Scooby, he is the only member of the gang to not appear in the show at all.

A spokesperson from Max released a statement on the cancelation. “Over the past two seasons, Mindy and Charlie have created an incredibly fun and fresh world within the iconic whodunit franchise. While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we thank them for their compelling coming-of-age storytelling, unrivaled clues, and hilarious hijinks.”

But don’t fret Scooby fans, a new show is still in the works at Warner Brothers. This will surround Scooby and Shaggy on a crazy adventure to Japan, as they accidentally unleash numerous mythical beasts. The series is made in anime style and looks to be more action-packed.
