The highly anticipated film adaptation of the infamous Tony Award winning broadway musical written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes In The Heights was originally meant to premier in theatres on June 26th, 2020.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the premier needed to be delayed; the film is now set to premier in cinemas on June 18th, 2021
The musical highlighting the tightly knit community in Washington Heights started off as an Off-Broadway production for 6 weeks in 2007, but eventually transferred to Broadway, and subsequently had a Tony-winning run at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in Feb. 2008-2011. The show was also nominated for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Directed by Jon M. Chu and featuring a screenplay by Hudes, the cast is made up of Anthony Ramos playing Usnavi, Corey Hawkins playing Benny, Melissa Barrera playing vanesa, Leslie Grace playing Nina, Olga Merediz playing Abuela Claudia, Daphne Rubin-Vega playing Daniela, Stephanie Beatriz playing Carla, Dascha Polanco playing Cuca, Gregory Diaz IV playing Sonny, Marc Antony playing Sonny’s father, Jimmy smits playing Kevin Rosario, and Noah Catala playing Graffiti Pete.
While Lin-Manuel Miranda is both the musical’s writer and film’s producer, he also plays Piraguero in the film. Piraguero is the Washington Heights local who operated the flavored ice cart.
