We often hear the argument of someone being a really good singer, therefore they should be famous because of it, and if someone isn’t as good as a singer, they don’t “deserve” the fame and fortune, and they’re simply “overrated.” So today I want to talk about the difference between an artist and a singer, in my opinion.
To answer many people’s question of why good singers aren’t equal to famous singers. There are many good singers around the world. You can open up youtube and just find millions of people with amazing voices. Many of them are probably better singers than many pop stars we have today.
However, what truly makes an artist is someone who can create art not because of how high of a note they hit, but how they have the creativity to make something that no one else can. It’s not something that anyone can just do. Some examples include: Taylor Swift, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, who are all not known for how great of a singer they are, but how they are able to create art through their words and lyrics.
Some of the greatest artists of all time are not even the best singers, but they succeeded by how they convey their art through their voices. On the contrary, there are amazing singers who are also amazing singers who have unique voices. People like Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Ariana Grande are some of the people who proved that they can be considered some of the best singers while also being capable of writing and making art.
To put it simply, you don’t need to sing like Whitney Houston to be considered as an amazing artist, however, it doesn’t take away anything if you can be both an amazing singer and artist. The music industry is full of talented people who are unique in their own way, and if everyone has to sound a certain way to achieve success, nobody will be special, and doesn’t that go against what music and art is all about in the first place?
