One thing I look forward to at the start of every year is seeing what’s trending in the fashion world. It can be helpful to scope out trends to see what may or may not be a worthy investment for the coming year. With that being said, there are often trends that go out of style quicker than they come into style. Here are three trends that I personally won’t be investing in.
- Layered Dresses and Pants
One Y2K trend that is back in fashion just in time for the winter is layering. The trend has been reinvigorated for the 2020s in a way that feels fresh and current. Layering tightly fitted tops with vests and cropped pieces are some cute ways that we’ve been seeing this trend styled, not to mention cute additions like arm and leg warmers over tights and long sleeves for that perfect balance of coquette and Japanese street style. Unfortunately, though, this trend has been taken too far by designers and celebrities (a.k.a. the trend-setters). The layering of dresses over jeans and pants is one trend I just can’t embrace. It is far too reminiscent of the looks styled by Disney Channel icons and pop stars of the early aughts. However, there are some adjustments to the trend that make it more palatable by today’s standards, such as layering more flowy and loose-fitting dresses over wide-legged pants (as opposed to the former, fit and flare jeans and mini dress combos).
- Bubble Hem
The bubble hemline is notorious for adding extra volume to skirts, dresses, and anything else that uses it. This is what helped to make it so popular in the 80s when fashion’s motto seemed to be “bigger is better.” While this trend was most notable in the 80s, it also had a moment in the 50s for more upscale and glamorous looks, and of course, it had another moment during the 2000s and 2010s. While it is a look that draws a lot of attention, it isn’t necessarily good attention. Because this trend hasn’t become fully mainstream yet, it’s a little too early to say how exactly it will be worn, but personally, I’d prefer if it wasn’t worn at all unless maybe it’s with a drop waist- but even then there’s only so much one can do with this. This is another trend that I’m going to have to veto.
- UGGs
Ugh. UGGs are back. These shoes were so highly ridiculed once they went out of style after the 2000s that I am genuinely surprised to see them making such a comeback. Obviously, the newer styles look a bit different from the previous fluffy, slipper-like incarnations that we’re all used to seeing. The 2020s take on the boots has a thicker sole, making the most of the platform trend, and a shorter cut. UGGs has also released a line of more colorful platform clogs. Now, I don’t personally have any sort of vendetta toward UGGs, but they definitely wouldn’t be my first choice. I mean, the pair that Hailey Beiber is wearing in the image above could have just as easily been substituted for some Timberlands and looked just as good. It just seems a bit premature to jump back on this trend after all the hate it got the first time around.
