I’ve always liked the month of August; it’s the calmer of the summer months as it feels like a wrap to the season. August feels like everything slows down just enough for you to enjoy it before it’s gone. Because of this, I always think it’s a good time to listen to music that can help to enhance that experience, and this summer, I believe I have found the album perfect for that.
Canadian singer-songwriter Charlotte Day Wilson has put just put out her debut album, Alpha, and it is the perfect album for those slow summer days in the sun. The album feels weighty because of Wilson’s attention-grabbing voice, but at the same time, mellow because of the sonics of the album. Songs like “Mountains” take the aesthetics from a gospel song and beautifully incorporates Wilson’s voice to make the song a standout in a tracklist that does not miss.
The album feels moody, as well, as moody as Wilson does on the cover, the production is fantastic while still being minimal, allowing Wilson’s voice and songwriting to shine, and boy does it shine.
I would recommend listening to the 30-minute-long album while driving on one of these warm afternoons, preferably after it’s rained. Another great setting; playing the album in full while sitting alone, or with friends, on a hazy calm August afternoon while the setting sun sets the backdrop.
