Why this is The Boys Worst Season yet (Op-Ed)
Since premiering in July 2019, The Boys has been among the wildest, raunchiest, funniest, and most popular shows on all streaming services. The Amazon Prime Video Original debuted its fourth season last month, but the series seems to have lost its momentum.
Season three concluded with the show’s main antagonist supervillain Homelander, lasering through and killing a citizen in broad daylight in front of hundreds of rioters. The crowd went silent and then suddenly began to applaud the acts of their beloved Homelander, believing what he did was warranted. It felt like we as an audience were being set up for an even more unhinged season four, and so far, it has failed to live up to those expectations.
Without diving too deep into the show, I want to talk about the lack of jaw-dropping moments. Fans of the show know that the show is famous for its outlandish and sometimes disturbing scenes. Whether it be gruesome deaths or crude character interactions, these scenes added to the plot in the past seasons. This season there have not only been fewer of these moments, but they have had little to no relevance to the overall story. Some examples of these include the scenes with the death of Web Weaver and the entire dungeon debacle with Tek Knight.
With one episode left, the show’s producer Eric Kripke took to social media to bring some more excitement to the season four finale. He announced on X that he directed the last episode which he is only credited with doing one other time during the final episode of season one, which is widely known as one of the better episodes of the entire series. “NOTHING WILL BE THE SAME AGAIN”, he warned in his X post. This gives me a lot more hope that the creators still have something up their sleeve.
The season finale premieres on Amazon Prime Video on July 18 at 3 am EST.
