Fashion Designer of the Month for May 2022
Fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto was born in Tokyo, on October 3, 1943. He studied law and graduated from Kelo University in 1966. It was thanks to his mother and through working in her boutique that he discovered his passion for couture, and he decided to study fashion design at Bunka Fashion College. In 1977, he launched his first collection, Y’s, which was a success. Four years later, he went on to launch his debut collection with his own brand, Yohji Yamamoto in 1981.
He is known for his oversized, slick silhouettes, and his two main lines Yohji Yamamoto and Y’s are featured in high-end stores worldwide.
He has received the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon, the Royal Designer for Industry, and the Master of Design award by Fashion Group International.
During his extensive career, Yamamoto has collaborated with big names like Adidas, Hermès, and Mikimoto, and he has designed for celebrities like Tina Turner, Placebo, and Elton John. He has also published an autobiography and designed a successful eyewear collection.
