The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office’s Human Trafficking Squad has arrested 123 men over the course of three months in an undercover operation called “Operation Renewed Hope”.
“The arrests made by our dedicated Human Trafficking Squad transcend mere statistics. They represent our commitment to protect the innocent and our resolute efforts to safeguard the most vulnerable members of our community,” stated Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister.
Undercover detectives used numerous tactics to target adults trying to communicate with children and teenagers including hotel, motel, and streetwalker operations where they posed as family members of minors they claimed were available for sex.
Later in the conference, Chronister explains the atrocious details of these individuals.
“We have come face to face with individuals from all walks of life, some of whom held positions of trust and authority,” Chronister explained. “That shockingly included a teacher, nurse, basketball coach, and a person employed by a spiritual organization. These are individuals who betrayed our trust.”
Not only were they able to make 123 arrested during this operation, but they were able to rescue human trafficking victims as well.
“What I find even more impressive is the fact that this squad rescued 28 victims from the grips of human trafficking,” Sheriff Chronister added. “That is 28 people whose lives were saved thanks to the hard work and dedication of the men and women on this team.”
The fight against human trafficking is a longstanding battle and will take more than the efforts of law enforcement. If you notice any suspicious activity in your area, don’t hesitate to contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888-373-7888.
