Today, February 6, the world will watch the opening ceremonies for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Being held in the Italian cities of Milano and Cortina d’Ampezzo, the games have already made history by becoming the most gender equal Winter Olympics to date, with women making up 47% of the athletes competing.
When the first Winter Olympic Games were held in Chamonix, France, in 1924, women made up less that 5% of total athletes and were only allowed to compete in one event: figure skating. This year, the Olympics have added 4 new women’s events: ski mountaineering sprint, luge doubles, ski jumping large individual hill, and freestyle skiing dual moguls. Additionally, the increase in mixed-gender events has had an impact on the overall number of women competing in the Winter Olympics, with the Skeleton mixed team relay making its Olympic debut this year.
Not only does this allow female athletes to have more opportunities to win medals, but it also ensures these sports get more media coverage. Seeing these sports on a world stage drastically increases the likelihood that a young athlete will pick up the sports and want to compete in future games.
The 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris were finally able to reach complete gender equality with a 50-50 split. The gender balance for the Olympic Games have been steadily reaching equilibrium over the years, with women making up 48% of competing athletes at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games. This shift has been achieved, in part, because of the large emphasis put on promoting inclusivity and gender equality initiatives. Olympic Host City Committees often establish “Gender Equality Promotion Teams”, who work directly with young athletes, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and Olympic Games partners with the goal of implementing their “Unity in Diversity” initiative. And it seems to be working!
Only time will tell whether the Winter Olympics will achieve the ideal 50-50 split, but personally, I have a good feeling about the 2030 games. The 2026 Winter Olympics are scheduled for February 6-22.
